Review: Burrawang General Store & Cafe, Burrawang

Blink, and you'd miss the town of Burrawang, nestled in the cozy New South Wales Southern Highlands. Strolling down the wide rural streets truly feels like a step back in time, with all the signature establishments of a traditional country Australian town. The iconic Burrawang General Store is the heart and soul of the village. Known for its down to earth approach to cooking inventive, and honest feasts, it is everything you would want from a road trip dining destination.

Perched at the top of the main street, take a trek up the uneven concrete stairs, up the vine-clad verandah and inside the General Store. High timber ceilings create a spacious feel in the main dining area, with shelves stacked with old blue Bushell's tea tins and metal posters for Kodak film- a snapshot of a time gone by when people use to shop at their general store for film and their everyday supplies.

Now people travel from all over to enjoy some seriously impressive dishes coming out a humble country kitchen. The approach to food here is all about respect and engagement with the local producers, with just the right balance of comfort and inventive quirkiness- something which makes the menu stands out from the crowd.

It's all about breakfast and lunch here, with cakes and afternoon tea style bites just waiting to be devoured with a steaming cup of tea or coffee. But don't be fooled by the heritage encrusted surrounds and quaint rural location, this menu is anything but classic and ordinary.

Unexpected and funky, the all-day breakfast menu is a real treat with the likes of coconut rice pudding served with espresso infused dates, chia seeds and a fresh citrus zest. For something a bit more savoury try the lemon pepper waffle, house citrus cured salmon, served with whipped dill, caper and red onion cream cheese.

Lunchtime dining offers larger feeds like the clever crab, chilli spaghettini. The thin strings of pasta are tossed with a zesty and light sauce of coriander and lime. Served with an elegant soft crab top on top.

If light and seasonal and an uber-dose of greens is more to your liking, then the Super Salad should be on your list. A mix of freshly picked salad greens, spinach, kale, avocado, broccoli, grapes, apple, tossed with the vibrant inclusion of blueberries, onion, seeds, almonds, dressed with a blueberry lemon vinaigrette.

Get away from the concrete jungle and explore a modern and creative take of Southern Highlands cuisine at Burrawang General Store
